Youth Compact: Year one, what did we do?

Year one of our project Regional youth compact for Europe has passed and it’s time to review our activities.

The first year was marked by 6 international and regional events and local activities in 11 communities.

Kick off

Our story started with the Kick-off Meeting in Belgrade, a training for the network members and a Kickoff event and Study visit National Convention on the European Union. This events were an opportunity to create a functional team and good cooperation.

Youth compact going regional!

The First Regional Thematic Network Forum and Annual Conference of the ALDA - Western Balkans Network for Local Democracy in Tirana gathered more than 80 participants engaged in the furthering of the EU accession processes of the Western Balkans countries.

Training is essential!

Balkan youngsters had 2 opportunities to developed their skills during the International workshop “Rule of law and fundamental rights” in Mostar and the POLITEIA Western Balkan School for Youth Participation in Danilovgrad. 50 youngsters were trained on different topics and returned to their countries eager to share the experience with their peers.

Do it locally!

11 local activities were organized in the form of Community multi stakeholder’s platforms. They had many formats, meetings, debates, presentations and discussions, but they shared the same goal to create a dialogue among CSOs and youth organizations with local government, public and private sector. They addressed the need to create more cross sector perspective in addressing the reforms implementation. More than 180 stakeholders took part in the activities.

All in All!

The project provoked the interest in the region by gathering more than 360 direct beneficiaries coming from different sector as representatives of local business, CSOs, local authorities, citizens and youngsters, who then shared their experiences in their communities.

The project “Regional youth compact for Europe” is implemented by the Center for Democracy Foundation, Balkan Network for Local Democracy, CRTA, Youth Act and Sodem. This project is funded by the European Union and the Balkan Trust for Democracy, a project of the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

Quarantine Blues

I returned home a month ago. I was in Mostar doing an internship. I got back just before the border was closed. It was March 15; a state of emergency was introduced that day. Although I didn't receive any information, written or oral, of how I should behave, I "volunteered" to put myself into self-isolation and called the number of the relevant service to ask what else I should do. "Measure your temperature twice a day and isolate yourself from other people for 14 days. If you have a temperature of 38 and start coughing, go to the hospital", the lady told me kindly over the phone. Not a problem, I already knew these were basic measures, and was prepared for them. I have college commitments anyway, and I have the internet and a bunch of books on my list that I haven't had the time to get to (or I've just been lazy). What I didn't know was how much the state of emergency would affect our society and how hard it would be for me to watch it all unfold.

Daily life during COVID-19

As we know corona virus has changed the lives of all people and significantly affected our daily activities.

Mixed feelings such as fear, uncertainty, panic and confusion about this situation have created many questions in my head, but from the very beginning, I believe firmly in one thing, the best we can do for ourselves and the community is to follow the prescribed measures. In this situation, many issues have been raised, from the violation of human rights and reducing the right to privacy on the one hand, and the importance of compliance with the recommended measures on the other hand.
