From unemployment to organic garden: Interview with Dejan Kosanic

By Haris Manjgo

Three years ago, together with two friends, Dejan (24 yers old) started a small cooperative with a brand ''Organic as ever''. They started with the cultivation of vegetables and ancient indigenous varieties of fruit, organically. In their garden they now have a wide variety of products, like aromatic herbs, medicinal plants and herbs, but also more fundamental cultured vegetables, like carrots, beets, onions, potatoes, garlic, cabbage, and such. The idea for the cooperative was born mainly from unemployment issues. Since they could not find a job, they decided to launch their own. They had conditions and they went for it!

1. What is healthy food for you?
- Dejan Kosanic: For me, healthy food represents the basis of good energy for every living being. Under healthy food we mean food that is not processed and treated as much. In this way, ie, by eating healthy food, you take the highest quality nutrients.

2. Why did you start this cooperative?
- D.K: First of all, it was a need for the environment, and of course my own need to eat healthier. All my life, I've been growing organic food with my parents, so I came up with the idea to offer it to my friends, but also to all those who are interested in healthy eating. The crucial point in the realization of this idea were the protests in Mostar, where we saw that our problem of unemployment, which has been following us for years, wasn't getting any solutions. We had the conditions and together with two of my friends, we started a small cooperative with the brand ''Organic as once''.

3. Did you recognize the needs of citizens for healthy food and was this one of the reasons you started in this business?
- D.K: This is exactly one of the main reasons for launching this cooperative. As I said, all my life I have eaten organic food from my garden and I wanted to share it with fellow citizens who do not have the conditions for producing the same.

4. Is this an opportunity for young people to develop their own business?
- D.K: We are running a small cooperative association which, among other things, aims at encouraging young people to engage in organic farming and, also, to contribute, primarily to themselves, and then to their midst. This idea has a place for everyone, for those who are studying in this field, but also for those who want to work. We launched the idea, not only for our own employment and happiness, but also to give young people the opportunity to learn, and to convey through their personal business. One of the goals is to use more abandoned arable areas of our city, for their actual purpose, and to reduce food imports from other parts of the world.

5. Were there obstacles at the beginning?
- D.K: Even today, after three years of existence, we find obstacles every day. The biggest obstacle was that we started this with very little funding, which is still posing a problem. The government and many other people of whom we asked for help, did not recognize this idea, nor had ventured in any way to help. There is so much land, and many people who want to work, but we do not have sufficient technical and financial resources to employ young people who would gladly like to work.

6. Does your community recognize your work?
- D.K: Citizens and community have recognized us, and they are the ones for which we survive and we keep on trying. They want to eat organic food and give us daily psychological support to continue what we are doing, and that interest is the greatest motivation for work.

7. Do you see a future in this business, and what advice would you give to young people like you?
- D.K: Of course I see a very bright future in this business, because we are the first in Bosnia and Herzegovina who launched the matter in this way. We produce food and deliver it by bikes to people who believe in us, and for whom the door of our farm is always open to come and see where and how we grow our products. I believe that our indigenous varieties are much more valuable and healthier than all those that our country is importing from all over the world, and that in time they will grow on surfaces, not only of Mostar, but all over our country. Unfortunately, due to the lack of funds we are still not able to open an office where citizens could purchase products whenever they want. Our current way of delivering the food is on bike, but we hope that the future will bring us many more possibilities, and even that we will be able to open our own store.
